Velocity of Information™ Index (VOI Index)

Our VOI Index™ takes the velocities of cash and capital and combines these into a single
proprietary Index that rates how much of a Soccer Ball a company is. We call it the Velocity of Information because companies that are relatively hollow – that do more than their competitors with less – better control the selling process and therefore turn customer information into cash at much higher rates.

The VOI Index allows us to rate companies in any industry. You can see from the chart “Information Velocity & Risk” how this works. Companies with VOI Index ratings of less than zero are high risk Lead Balls. Those with valuations of more than one times revenues are overvalued. Some highly so, as this chart, which rates global phone companies, thought to be blue chip, shows.

In “VOI Index & Value Creation” we show how the computer industry plays out. Higher VOI Index performance translates into market capitalizations that are higher multiples of sales. Lower VOI Index performance means lower values. The trend line is unforgiving.

In “Information Velocity and Valuation” we put the picture together in our valuation matrix showing that high VOI Index companies also achieve Brand Superiority in their markets. That is to say, their super brands are so strong that they affect outcomes.

“Velocity of Information Index” shows another application of our Soccer Ball Management System: its use in predicting the outcome of mergers. This chart shows that for Hewlett-Packard, already lagging far behind Dell, acquiring Compaq is a big mistake. Competitors can use this system therefore to measure the future strength of H-P now that it has committed to Compaq. Our system can be used to revolutionize due diligence and to warn companies off bad deals.
